Monster In Your Closet

An assignment in my animation class to make a designer toy design with a "monster in my closet" theme. Based on feedback from friends on facebook I decided a centipede snake-like guy would be a good choice for creepy/scary. Sorry Adam it isn't female!

  1. That would certainly creep me out!

  2. I feel the need to STOMP! But then the artistic-ness of it would make me want to do nothing, but place it on a fluffy soft pillow.

  3. This pleases me.

WHY? WELL, dearest friend, here is why:
-As always: beautiful line quality. You have a remarkable natural sense of when to ease or press your ink brush pen.
-Sooo clean! I LOVE your works in the marker and ink. LOVE THEM, I TELL YOU! Really. A lot. It's almost unhealthy how much i do.
-The nostrils! THE N--THE NOS---THE NOSTRILS! YES!!!! YESSS!!!!!
-The lower body--the movement of the shapes in the legs really tickle my fancy. A LOT.
-the arrangement of simple shapes I can break them down into = GORGEOUS. (I need to try that sometime...you should teach me the ways!)
-ALL OF THE LEGS/ARMS= HECKA FETCHITY SCARY
-great texture- you did very well expressing it without over doing it (LOVE the teeth)---something I admire, and something I oftentimes struggle with.
-you kept the values simple, but gorgeous (of course--you are fantastic at that).
-also in relation to texture---good job expressing the difference in texture between the teeth and the...appendages? arms? Anywho, that was a potentially dangerous task-- the teeth and arm thingies are such a similar shape that they could have very easily gotten confused. The textures of the two are clearly different. Well done in that aspect!

Although there is just enough description in the texture that one is able to distinguish between the teeth and arms, I wonder if the shapes are a little too similar. I assume that the aim was to keep the shapes and lines unified (which you did a good job of). I don't know how you could fix that. I don't know if it has to do with the size, angle, alignment, line weight of the shapes...I have no idea. I'd have to study it longer. Anyway, another thing I would suggest is clearing up what exactly is going on up top. The angling of the head/face in relation to the movement of the neck/back scale thingies of the creature seem a little conflicting. And the lines at the very top on the back of the monster are the tiniest (and I really mean the tiniest) bit too broad. I understand that you were expressing a shadow there, but I think that it is still just a little bit too much in contrast with that light grey marker--it distracts a little too much from the rest. Those are the only things that I noticed that I would change about this. I am no expert, but that's just my opinion...and you know I ALWAYS have good things to say about your art, so I was trying to look for things I could critique (cause you always ask me for that kinda stuff :P).

BUT!!! Neumann, as always, this is AMAZING. You are so skilled, and it's been great to see your style and your understanding of the world develop since I've known you as an artist. I am so proud of you, you fantastic fish, you.
